Welcome to the webpage of Interactive Intelligent Systems Laboratory (IIS Lab, pronounced like “ease lab”) at The University of Tokyo. We are a group led by Koji Yatani, conducting a broad range of research on Human-Computer Interaction and Ubiquitous Computing with emphasis on designing, implementing, and evaluating interactive systems with machine intelligence behind.

We are in Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Systems (EEIS), School of Engineering and Emerging Design and Informatics Course, Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies.

We are looking for highly-motivated, energetic researchers and students who want to work with us. If you are interested in the following topics or just want to visit us, please feel free to ping Koji at [his_first_name] “at” iis-lab.org. If you are considering to work with us, please attach your CV and a short statement of what you would like to work on (preferred in English). For more details, please check this page.

  • Usable security systems with novel sensing methods,
  • Information visualization systems for productivity and creativity support,
  • Mobile/wearable systems for personal healthcare and accessibility, and
  • Anything else about interfaces or interactive systems which you believe that could change the game. 🙂

Mission Statement

The mission of Interactive Intelligent Systems Laboratory (IIS Lab) is to improve people’s quality of life through intellectual activities enhanced by interactive systems with intelligence behind we design, implement, and evaluate. Complexity of data, information, and contexts surrounding people are well beyond human cognitive capabilities though all of them are intertwined with various intellectual activities. We believe that well-designed computing support can help surviving this complexity; reducing effort on interacting with a large volume of data and information, promoting interaction with people in social contexts, and therefore improving the quality of life. Yet, computing technologies would not always be perfectly precise and accurate. Predictions and forecasts by computing always has a chance to be incorrect because human behaviors are also complex to model. We thus believe that intelligent systems must be interactive; collaboration between human and computing would lead to the best support on intellectual activities, and this is what future Human-Computer Interaction should demonstrate and future interaction design should uncover. We envision that through interactive intelligent systems, everyone will be able to commit more to higher-level intellectual activities and make grass-root effort on making the world better.

IIS Lab
