Reading papers is one of the important research activities. But it is also much more time/effort-consuming than you may think. In particular, reading papers in English is quite hard for non-native junior students. You may even have a trouble in just identifying papers you should read. But after you experience multiple times, you will get a good idea of what keywords you should use, who publishes many papers in the topic you are interested in, and which part of the paper you should read carefully.

The following content is what I originally prepared as an internal document for our IIS Lab members. I made this public on May 2018 and am making small revisions as appropriate. I hope this would help you if you are told to read papers bu don’t know what to do.

The purpose of reading papers is not to just print them out and skim through them. The purpose of reading a paper is to understand the research in your own way and to apply it to your own research. By reading papers, you should compare against your own ideas, understand whether there is any overlap, find whether there is knowledge or technology that you can use, and know what has not yet been uncovered. If you are new to research, it is easy to lose this objective because reading a paper itself is already hard work. So please keep this objective in your mind.

You do not need to understand every single detail the first time you read a paper. It is fine as long as you can gather enough information to fill in TAMMIC and KURR, as described in the beginner section below. Then, if necessary, you can understand the system and experiments in detail. In this sense, it is not desirable to spend a lot of time reading papers in many cases. But you have to keep a record about that paper so that you can easily find out when you are like “Oh, I think I have seen a similar paper to this one, and I should come back to that.” Please try to be like that through reading.

The most recommended way to find papers is to search on the Internet. In particular, google scholar is very useful. Start with google scholar, and then use other search engines if needed.

The next step is to think about keywords. First, think of five English words that would describe your idea in a relatively general way. For example, for the idea of “using images from the Tabelog (a Japanese restaurant review website) to determine accessibility for wheelchair users,” what keywords would you use? Proper nouns are (basically) not suitable for search, so Tabelog could be replaced with “review websites” or “restaurant websites”. There are many different types of images, so you may want to specify the exterior image of the restaurant, for example. As mentioned above, there are a few words that are somewhat specific, but not too vague (not a keyword that would be caught in any paper).

You then choose keywords that you should not miss. In this case, “accessibility” is a must because any paper describing something similar to this idea will surely use the word accessibility in a paper. The same applies for “wheelchair”, but there may be a paper like “Using images from Tabelog to determine accessibility for people with visual impairments”. If there is such a paper, you may want to read it too. Therefore, it seems to be less important than the word “accessibility”. In this way, try to find keywords that would be critical to describe your idea.

Now you need to think of combinations based on these essential keywords. For example, “accessibility wheelchair,” “accessibility review website,” and “accessibility restaurant website” could be good ones. On the other hand, “accessibility image” may be a bit too broad. So you wouldn’t use these ones unless you find papers with other keyword sets.

When you search with a keyword on google scholar, the search result gives you a list of titles and their number of citations. At this point, you need to think about which papers to choose, but the following heuristics are probably helpful.

  • Papers that seem to be close to your idea after reading the title.
  • Papers with a large number of citations (more than 50 I would say).
  • Papers that have been presented at top-tier conferences in your field or that are most relevant to your idea.
  • Papers with authors whose names you see frequently.

When you find something interesting, click on it to check the title, author, journal/conference name, and year of publication. Does it look still relevant? Unless you think it is clearly out of your scope, check the abstract next. Most abstracts are written in about 150 words per paragraph. Try to extract the most important information from it in about two minutes. The important thing is to grasp the following two pieces of information. Try to find and extract these two pieces of information from the abstract.

  • What did that paper do (e.g., what system did authors create, what studies they conducted)?
  • What did that paper find?

How do you feel after reviewing the information you found? If you had to divide this paper into three categories of “must read”, “should read but not must read”, and “not really relevant”, which would you choose? If it’s a “must read,” it’s likely to have a lot to do with your own thoughts and ideas. It’s also very likely that other papers you would like to read would cite that paper.

And did you find any words that might be new keywords? If so, please take a note.

If you find that this is the paper you need to read, go back to the google scholar search results page and follow the “Cited by” link below the title of that paper.  This will take you to the papers that cite the paper you just selected, allowing you to search further. If you can’t find good papers by backtracking citations, try doing the same thing with a different paper, or change the keywords, to expand your search.

After your search, you will read the papers that fall into “must read” or “should read, but not must read”. You can repeat the above process and collect a certain number of papers, or you can start reading after collecting a few papers. Please do search in a way that is easy for you to organize.

If you do not have deep experience of reading papers, please start here. At this stage, you should be very conscious of summarizing the paper in your own words after reading.

Understand how many papers you will have to read

How many papers do you think you need to read for one research project? Of course, it depends on the topic, and some papers are read in depth and some are read briefly but based on my experience, it is necessary to read about 50 papers. If it is a topic that has been studied a lot for a long time, you need to read even more. You are not done when you finish reading the papers that your supervisors or senior students have told you. You need to do your own research and find more papers from there. Therefore, when you think “Let’s explore this idea further,” think that you will have to read 50 papers. And calculate back how much time you can spend on each paper before your deadline.

Set a time limit for reading

You can spend as much time as you want when you read a paper. Of course, if you spend a lot of time, you can understand them better. However, in a research project, you have to read a lot of papers. If you look at the theses and dissertations of your seniors, you will see that they contain at least 30 papers. In fact, there are many more papers that could not be included here. For example, let’s say you have 50 papers to read as determined above; at the rate of one paper per day, it will take about two months. If you are forced to change your idea, you will have to read another 50 papers. You will soon realize that this pace is too slow!

For these reasons, you should not read papers without having clear objectives. Thus, you should try to limit your reading time. Of course, it depends on the length of the paper, but since there is a limit to human concentration, it is best to limit yourself to 90 minutes at most. As you get used to it, reduce the time to an hour or 30 minutes. The more you do this, the better idea you will have on how long it takes you to read a paper. Then, you will know how long it takes you to read and summarize a paper. This will make it easier for you to make a work plan.

Once you have set a time, let’s read a paper! Make sure you have an environment where you can concentrate. To avoid reading without a focus, try to summarize the paper in your own words. Do not just copy the abstract. Make sure to summarize the paper in your own words.

The framework for summarizing a is TAMMIC, containing six key points. Before you start reading the paper, prepare paper, text file, evernote, google docs, github, or anything you like so that you can quickly write down information related to each item. Then, fill in each item as you read the paper. The important point is to look for the information about the following items in your reading. Don’t just read the paper and write about it, but read the paper as if you were looking for the following items in order to write about them. Each item should be about a few lines long. If there are any great diagrams or photos, you may want to copy them as well.

If you are new to research or working on a topic in a field you are not familiar with, be sure to look at the authors carefully. Knowing who is leading the field and which groups are active in this space is the first step to become a researcher.

  • Title:
It is also a good idea to record the name of the conference and the year of presentation.
  • Author:
Check briefly whether a paper has names you frequently see. Check not only the name of the first author, but also the name of the person later in the list (as that person can be an advisor of the first author).
People’s names are more important than you may think. This is because when discussing a topic, we often say, “In XX’s research, they do … “. Be sure to memorize their names so that you will be able to recognize them when they come up!
  • Motivation:
What issues or problems did they try to solve?
What was lacking in existing research?
  • Method:
What system did they create? Why did they think that the system design was well jusified?
What algorithm did they create? Why did they consider that the algorithm design was good enough?
What kind of surveys did they do? How did they justify their study design?
What experiments did they conduct? How did they justify their experimenal design?
  • Insight:
What results did they obtain? Under what conditions did it work, and under what conditions did it not work?
What are the new findings? What are the findings that could be used in other applications or systems?
  • (One-sentence) Contribution Summary:
Based on the above information, summarize in the following format.
[Author] did [Method] to solve [Motivation] and found [Insight].
This is how you will describe this paper in the Related Work section in your future paper.  So, please keep in mind that it is very important to summarize in this format.

Finally, organize information to find next papers you need to read. For this purpose, use the KURR framework below. As with TAMMIC, summarize and record the information in your own words.

  • Keyword:
What are new keywords from this paper that could be used in your search?
What words do they use to describe concepts similar to your own ideas?
  • Unknown:
What is still unknown or unresolved?
  • Reflection:
How similar is this paper to my own ideas?
What parts of the paper do you think you can apply to your own research?
Do you think you need to read it again?
Is there a high probability that you will cite it when writing your own paper? It is a good idea to rate on a scale of 1 to 4: irrelevant, unlikely, likely, and almost certain.
  • Reference:
Which of the papers listed in the related studies are close and which you have not read?

You can then read the papers you list up in KURR, or you can search again using new keywords. As you repeat this process, you will run out of new keywords and related work listed in KURR. Then, you will feel that you have read almost everything.

Grasp the overview of the field

Once you have done a certain number of papers, it is time to organize the papers you have read. The goal here is clustering.

First, extract the papers that you consider have medium and high likelihood of being cited in KURR. Then, classify the papers into about three groups. It is difficult to classify them in a general way, but first, make pairs of papers that you think are obviously similar. You will probably end up with several pairs. Then, from those pairs, merge the ones that are very similar to each other. In this way, you can create groups in a bottom-up fashion.

If you can’t merge the pairs, try to find a keyword in each group that characterizes that group. At this point, if there are groups with similar keywords, reconsider whether they really can’t be merged, and adjust the groups if necessary.

Once you have done this, think about whether papers that are not yet in a group or pair can join one of the groups. You can change the keywords if necessary. You will also consider the possibility of merging the groups again. You may also include papers that you think less likely to be cited.

When you get to this point, review your entire clustering. How many groups do you have? If there are too many, try to merge more. How about the number of papers in each group? Is there a group that has a small number of papers, but all of them are likely to be cited? If so, you may need to examine more papers that belong to that group. On the other hand, if there is a group of only papers that are unlikely to be cited, you may want to leave them for later in this project. In this way, you can make sure that your literature survey is not missing anything important.

If you can create three groups of about 10-15 papers per group, you are done. Make sure that the groups are mutually exclusive to some extent. Each group will roughly correspond to one subsection of the related work section in your future paper.

例えば,“Accessibility is very important for wheelchair users, but such information is difficult to acquire.”だけでは確かにそうかもしれませんが,何がどう重要なのか,難しいのかよくわかりませんよね.“Wheelchair users need to obtain information about whether a location is accessible to them before their visits. However, acquiring such information is often challenging because existing online services and maps may not necessarily offer sufficient accessibility data about a location.”

  • Overall review score:
  • Review confidence:
  • Review:
  • Confidential comments to program committee:
